Makeup - Selecting the Proper Colors for Your Skin Tone
Category: Make-up

Hey Mary,

I need some help with my eye shadow. My eyes always look either too dark or the color seems to clash with my skin tone. How can I know what will look good on me?

-Rita

You can really make a difference in your appearance by choosing eye shadow colors that complement your natural beauty. Though it's not rocket science, it's not the easiest thing in the world to figure out what looks best on you, given your unique coloring.

When trying to decide which colors are best for you, keep these tips in mind:

  • Buy shades that go well with your skin tone and eye color and that gently contrast with (but don't match exactly) the shade of your eyes.
  • Eye shadow should be chosen based on your eye color and your skin tone, not the color of your clothes! Eye shadow colors that work well with your eye color and skin tone will look good on you, no matter what you wear from day to day.
  • Light colors generally tend to draw more attention to your eyes, while darker colors tend to soften or downplay them.
  • If you want to use two shades of eye color together, choose tones that go well together. Try applying a lighter color over the entire eyelid and a darker shade from the eyelashes to the crease (over the lower half of the eyelid).
  • Don't overdo it. Keep in mind that a little color can go a long way!

Though choosing eye shadow colors is not an exact art, there are some good general rules of thumb that can help you to decide which colors might work best for you:

  • Women with blue eyes should not use blue eye shadow because it takes away from the color of their eyes. Soft browns and tans or pinks and lavenders are a good choice for blue eyes. Women with blond hair and blue eyes look particularly good in shades of brown and gray. Those with blue eyes can further enhance the look with Collyre Bleu by Verseo. It makes blue eyes even bluer.
  • For women with green eyes, purple shades are an excellent eye shadow choice. Brown and light tan shades also work well.
  • Women with brown eyes look good wearing many different shades. Pinks and purples work really well, but so do tans and browns. Those women who have very dark brown or black eyes do well with brown and charcoal shades.
  • Women who have hazel eyes can also wear a variety of shades depending on what color they want to bring out in their eyes.

As I mentioned above, choosing colors of eye shadow isn't an exact science, so experiment and have fun! With these simple guidelines you'll soon find the colors that work best for you, and you'll be ready to look your best.
