Saving Face: How to Wash Your Face Properly
Category: Skin Care
Dear Mary, This might sound like a basic question, but can you explain the best technique for washing my face? I have a cleanser I really like but I want to be sure I'm applying it correctly.
- Elizabeth

One of the main reasons that people suffer from acne or oily or dry facial skin is that they don’t wash properly, either because they’re in a hurry in the morning or night or because they don’t always know how to wash properly. The key to properly washing your face is to unclog your pores and remove dirt, makeup, and excess oils. I like the Pure Moisure™ product line. For best results with any product you use, follow these steps:
1. Begin by washing your hands, if necessary.
2. Then wet your face with warm (not hot) water.
3. Apply the cleanser to your fingertips, and then begin at your forehead,
moving downward, and gently apply the cleanser to your face
using circular motions.
4. Massage the cleanser into your skin for about a minute.
5. Then rinse thoroughly with cool (not cold) water to help close your pores.
6. Finally, gently, thoroughly pat your face dry with a clean, dry towel.
Some other important tips:
- Use the type of cleanser designed for your skin type (for normal, dry, oily, and so forth).
- Avoid washing your face with soap, as soap will dry your skin.
- If your facial cleanser seems too oily, try using a bar cleanser (again, not soap), instead. They tend to be less oily.
- Don’t forget your neck!
