I don't just have a sweet tooth, my entire mouth is filled with sweet teeth. I am always rummaging around the house for a morsel of chocolate, peeking into the freezer for a pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream, or standing on my tiptoes in front of the cupboards to reach a box of peanut butter cookies.
In an effort to curb these cravings, my husband and I have decided that in lieu of having sweets around the house, we're going to dedicate a large bowl on our kitchen counter to a variety of fresh fruits. Biting into a sweet wedge of a Clementine orange, or savoring a batch of frozen grapes are satisfying alternatives, and often more refreshing on warm days.
Your waistline won't be the only feature that benefits from incorporating plenty of fresh fruit into your daily diet. Fruit does wonders for your complexion and overall skin health. The following is a list of some of the best fruits to pick up at your local farmer's market. When you shop locally and buy organic produce, you help support small farmers who raise their crops in an eco-friendly manner without the use of harmful pesticides. This will equate to less pollution for our earth, pure nourishment for you, and a better living for responsible farmers.
Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit
Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, which promotes healthy skin. The big C also enables the skin's collagen to maintain its elasticity and suppleness, which will help stave off wrinkles. If you're not a fan of citrus, other fruits that have a high vitamin C content are strawberries, guava, and papaya. You may not want to bite into a lemon, but pucker up to a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade, or garnish a spinach salad with some grapefruit sections. Sneak citrus into your daily diet for optimum skin results.
Blueberries
Blueberries are currently in season and ripe with positive attributes. They have healing properties for skin damaged by burns and scarring. Loaded with antioxidants, they protect and neutralize your skin from harsh exposure to daily elements like sun rays and pollution. Toss them into a smoothie or savor them on pancakes.
Avocado, (Yes, it's a fruit!)
Many think an avocado is a vegetable, but any way you slice it, it is great for you. We are crazy for guacamole in our house, and what a bonus that such a festive, delicious dip is dripping with health benefits. Avocado may be used externally as a softening agent for chapped hands and rough skin, but ingested, it is rich in niacin, also known as B3, which helps clear blotchy, acne prone skin.
Apples
An apple a day may keep more than the doctor away. We all know the adage, but how many of us actually take the time to eat an apple a day? Maybe if we add to the list that apples help erase fine wrinkles, soothe itchy, inflamed skin, and that their pectin tightens saggy skin, we'd be more tempted to take a bite. Apples are also high in fiber, which is an essential aspect of skin health due to its capacity to cleanse the system. Nothing about this fruit is forbidden.
Go get beautiful from the inside out by eating these fruits. But I won't tell if you still treat yourself to chocolate every once in awhile!
